OCR: MARS AND EARTH: A COMPARATIVE HISTORY THE SEARCH FOR LIFE The problem of Mars (cont.) On Mars, carbon dioxide became the principal component in the increasingly thin atmosphere. The greenhouse effect was reduced and temperatures once again dropped below the freezing point, while the atmospheric pressure diminishing accordingly. Today, in the winter, in the polar regions of the Red Planet, carbon dioxide forms frozen caps. These then return to the gas state in the spring, raising the local atmospheric pressure; this phenomenon engenders important atmospheric disturbances. This is, notably, the cause of the very violent winds observed on Mars. These winds, in turn, are the source of extremely intense mechanical erosion, producing dunes and rivers of sand, and sculpting other surface features. MARS BETAT
